In the Desert

“In the Desert” is a poem I wrote back in college after being inspired by a gospel song written by a Korean singer-songwriter.

In the Desert

By The Time Traveler

As everyone knows,

There is nothing but

Heat and barrenness

In the desert.

It is a dismal place

Surrounded by the bleak view

Of endless sand dunes.

During the day, one has to endure

Unquenchable thirst and oppressive heat

While at night one is tortured by

The piercing wind,

Darkness,

And uncertainty of a tomorrow.

It is a miserable, lonely place to be.

But also in the desert

There is nothing but

The glistening stars above

There is nothing but

Hope for an oasis somewhere

Nothing, no one to turn to but

Jesus

There is no water but

Rivers of living water

There is no one else but

Ourselves to look at,

With all our

Weaknesses,

Hurts,

And flaws

That only God alone

Understands,

Heals,

And envelopes.

We become closer to God

In the desert.
